Someone painted this long ago. Offered for your consideration is an extremely rare 1880 - 1890's Pre-Prohibition era - side script logo 4" tall by 9 1/8" wide (from end of spout to end of handle) silver plate "Chamberlain & Co's Silver Rye" teapot / pitcher / jug.
This is one of the rarer hotel type distillery style teapots and is very attractive in its appearance. Distillery was located in Detroit Michigan and was in operation from about 1879 to 1900. The company was a whiskey, bourbon, and rye distillery operation, which their advertising items rarely surface. After 1900, the company became known as C. Ritter & Co and it continued the Chamberlain brand name.
During the era that this teapot was made, the company was located at 51 Woodward Avenue near the downtown area of Detroit. However like so many successful and popular distilleries and breweries across the county before prohibition, they company went out of business in 1916; just prior to the onset of Prohibition. This teapot / jug features the most beautiful cursive script on the side that reads "Chamberlain & Co's - Silver Rye". Early type silver soldered - nickel silver, and was made especially to advertising their "Silver Rye". The tea pot is very ornate, has a floral type ornamental finial atop the handle.
It has a highly detailed factory engraving on the side. This is only the 3rd piece like this I have ever seen or had, and it is considered very rare and extremely hard to find. This teapot / jug would have been most likely used at a hotel, restaurant, saloon, or tavern that served Chamberlain's "Silver Rye" at the bar, lunch counter, or for use with establishment's hotel china and glassware type serving items for table settings. This is not a souvenir; rather, this is the heavyweight type Steamship, Hotel, and Railroad silverplate.
It is in nice looking condition, but it does have several dings on the outer sides, some pitting marks, some light corrosion marks, but overall it looks wonderful! The bottom has also been repaired sometime with solder, but it not noticeable while it is displayed. The inside has some pitting and old calcium deposits from usage. An excellent addition to your Home Furnishing / Home Decorating, Whiskey / Rye, Creamer / Pitcher / Coffee, or Pre-Prohibition Collection.
