Has initials on all pieces in very fancy script KLM. And on the Coffee pot there is an inscription which reads From the Civitas Club June 24th 1899. The Civitas Club of Brooklyn, NY. Was founded by Katherine Louise Maltby (Same initials as on all the pieces of the set), an 1875 graduate of Vassar College and founder and director of Miss Katherine L. Maltby's school for girls in Brooklyn Heights. The Civitas Club was developed as a forum for the young woman of the city "to awaken an interest in matters pertaining to municipal welfare, and to foster all movements within the circle of it's influence that have for their end the improvement of any phase of civic life" This interest in civic matters was coupled with philanthropic support of social reform and a desire to make women's voices heard in political and social realms.
